William J. Kirkwood, Sr.

William J. Kirkwood, Sr., 94 of Wilmington passed away peacefully at Compassionate Care Hospice on Saturday, January 19, 2019.

Bill was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Elizabeth (Hackett) and Paul Kirkwood. He was a 1941 graduate of Wilmington High School and worked for 23 years as a painter for Chrysler Corporation. Bill also served as the union safety representative. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena parish and he enjoyed bowling and golf. Bill was affectionately known as the “Mayor” of the Crossroads Restaurant Counter group. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Cecilia in 1997 and his sons, William J., Jr. in 2003 and Robert E. in 2012.

Bill is survived by his son, Michael J. Kirkwood of Wilmington; his daughter-in-law, Mary Kirkwood of Elkton, MD; his grandchildren, Robert Kirkwood, Katherine Fortune, Amy Maynard, Becca Mitchell and Craig Kirkwood and his great-grandchildren, Aiva and Samuel Maynard.

Funeral services will be held in the All Saints Cemetery Chapel, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington on Friday afternoon at 2 PM, where friends may call after 1 PM. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2505 Centerville Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 or Compassionate Care Hospice, 405 E. Marsh Lane, Ste. 4, Newport, DE 19804.
