Thomas A. Campbell, age 77, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at Compassionate Care Hospice on Thursday, January 24, 2019.
Born October 31, 1941, Tom was the oldest of eight children. He was a 1959 graduate of P. S. du Pont High School and received an Honorable Discharge following his service in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserves.
Tom began his career as an instrumentation mechanic at the DuPont Chambers Works plant in Penns Grove, NJ. In 1975, he started his own instrumentation service business and relocated to Freehold, NJ. Success allowed him to retire early and move his family in 1987 to Sarasota, FL. He returned to Wilmington in 2013.
Tom was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He enjoyed playing golf, coaching little league and soccer, cooking, "betting the horses" and playing poker. Tom loved all things NASCAR and was also an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. Just a few days before passing away, he talked about the thrill of living long enough to see the Eagles win their first Super Bowl.
His children will always remember first and foremost his work ethic and the value to be gained from a hard day's work. There are also many treasured memories from summers spent on Long Beach Island, NJ. He was always happy to "have a catch," fish, build a sand castle, or play golf with his children and their friends. His homemade hoagies, cheesesteaks and huge seafood dinners were always a favorite.
In addition to his parents, Tom and Sara Campbell, Tom was predeceased by his infant son, Patrick; his brother, Ben Campbell; sister, Suzanne Campbell; and sister-in-law, Rose Campbell.
He is survived by his son, Devin Campbell, his wife Lori and their daughter Liana of Sarasota, FL; his daughter, Melanie Becker, her husband Tom and their three sons, Pasqual Burgess, and Shawn and Trevis Burgess-Becker of Clearwater, FL. He is also survived by his brothers, Jim Campbell (Kathy) of Newark and Bill Campbell of Wilmington; his sisters, Pat Ryan (John) of Ocean View, DE; Carol Smith (Jim); Linda Attix (Chuck) of Wilmington; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice for the amazing care and kindness provided to Tom during his short stay with them.
