Norma A. Rivera

Norma A. Rivera, 78 passed away peacefully on Friday, April 13, 2018 at the home of her daughter Maribel surrounded by her family and friends.

Norma was born in Esteli, Nicaragua, the daughter of the late Jose and Selfida Molina. In her native country she was a teacher.

In 1979 after President Anastasio Somoza was overthrown from power, Norma, her ex-husband and two older children arrived in Wilmington, Delaware. To the extreme generosity of the John’s Cummings family of Wilmington; Norma and her family found shelter, support, kindness and a place to call home. Through the assistance of this family, the Spanish community in Wilmington, St. Paul’s Church and local government officials; she was able to obtain political asylum, citizenship and eventually was able to reunite with the rest of her family and settled in Delaware.

Norma was grateful for the opportunities this country offered her family and she enjoyed spending time with her family, St. Paul’s church members and friends. She also loved face-timing with her family in Nicaragua.

Norma is survived by her children and their spouses, Evelyn & Jose Selva, Maribel Rivera, Wilber & Erika Rivera, Ana & Dan Lowe, Rodolfo & Lorraine Rivera, Pablo Rivera and pre-deceased by her son Silvio II Rivera; her grandchildren, Alejandro Selva, Veronica Selva, Silvio III Rivera, Nicholas Rivera, Jessica Rivera, Joshua Rivera, Cassandra Lowe, Casey Rivera, Anthony Rivera, Joseph Rivera; her sibling, Salvadora Munguia & Family and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at St. Paul’s Church, 4th and Jackson Streets at 11 AM, where friends may call after 10 Am. Burial will be in the Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to her church in Chinandega, Nicaragua (Iglesia Santa Ana - contact family members).
