Katherine "Kitty" Carney Durnan

Our sweet Kitty joined our Lord in Heaven on August 6th, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Kitty was born and raised in Wilmington, she attended St. Paul’s School, Lore School, Wilmington High School and Goldey Beacom.

She worked for the DuPont Company as a secretary before marrying the love of her life, who preceded her in death, James J. “Jim” Durnan. She also worked as a seamstress for Francis Boutique, volunteered for 30 plus years for the Junior Board of St. Francis Hospital and was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Anne Gillespie Carney and Clement A. Carney, and her sister, Elizabeth Taylor.

She is survived by her children, Marie Ciotola (Tony), Kathryn Edge, James H. Durnan (Karen), Jeffry Durnan (Betsy) and Patrick Durnan (Donna): her siblings, Peggy Sharp, Anne Marie Donovan and Bud Carney (Edie); her grandchildren, Megan, Kimberly, Jeffry (Scott), Melissa, Erin, Sean, Casey, Patrick and “her boys” Christopher, Ethan, Jaden and Sam.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 12th. Friends and family are invited to visitation beginning at 9 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2505 Centerville Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 where Mass will begin at 10:30 AM. Entombment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Catherine of Siena Church at the address above. Condolences may be made by visiting

Dear Durnam family, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your family can draw comfort from the words at James 4:8. "Draw close to God and he will draw close to you". Grieving is hard but with Gods help it can be easier. I hope his Word and his gift of prayer can help you during your grief.
