Jospeh H. Cannon

Joseph H. Cannon, age 96, of Newark, DE passed away at his home on April 29, 2018.

Born in Linwood, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Hudson and Ledie F. Fearns Cannon. 

Originally enlisted in the Maryland National Guard, then the U.S. Army prior to World War II, he was a military truck driver in the Liberation of New Guinea, and the South Philippines.  He was awarded the Good Conduct medal with Clasp of American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Service Ribbon, Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Ribbon. 

Then in the October 1947 with the creation of the U.S. Air Force, he was one of the original enlistments as an Instrumentation mechanic where he served overseas in New Guinea, Alaska and two tours in Germany. He participated in the Berlin Airlift Device.  SSGT Cannon received the following medals and awards during his USAF career Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal with 5 Bronze Loops, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Guided Missile Insignia.  SSGT Cannon retired from the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California after 20 years of service in May 1963.

He is survived by his two sons, Clifford H. Cannon of Newark who care for his father in these last years and Joseph H. Cannon, II of Hope Mills, NC; his grandson, Joseph H. Cannon, III of Fayetteville, NC.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
