James J. “Jimmy” Durante

James J. “Jimmy” Durante, age 76, of Bear, DE, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 peacefully at home after his courageous battle with cancer.  Born in Wilmington, DE, Jimmy grew up in Wilmington where he met the love of his life, Mary Ann.  Jimmy graduated from Brown Vocational High School.  After graduation, he went to trade school, and, in 1963, married the love of his life, Mary Ann.  In 1965, Jimmy was drafted into the U.S. Army, stationed in San Antonio, Texas.  He then did what he loved for the rest of his life and that was to be a plumber for Local #26, then onto Local #74, where he retired after 45+ years.  He was a very big family guy who loved his family dearly.  He was willing to help anyone in need.  He was a very well-known man by so many people.  Jimmy was known in Delaware to be the “little Italian plumber with the Chevette full of tools”.

Jimmy was predeceased by his father, John Durante, his mother, Amelia Durante and his brother-in-law, Denis Olivere.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Durante; his two sisters, Diane and Patricia (Joe); his four sisters-in-law, Denise (Tom), Janet (Mike), Kathleen (Phil) and Carol (Bernard); and his brother-in-law, Charles (Velta).  Also surviving are his three sons, Dominic, Sr. (Monica), Jimmy Jr. (Diane) and John (Crystal); his grandchildren, Dominic Jr., Nicholas, Alexis, Austin, Autumn, Shelby (Jason), Amanda (Jon), John, Cody and Savannah; six great grandchildren, Isabella, Evelyn, Amelia, Cameron, Christian and Anthony.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and an abundance of friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 26th at 11:30 AM at St. Paul’s Church in Delaware City, 209 Washington Street, Delaware City, DE 19706 where friends and family are invited to visitation after 10 AM.  Burial will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.  Condolences can be made by visiting MealeyFuneraHomes.com
