James F. Kerr

At the age of 61, James F. Kerr passed away peacefully in a hospital in Orlando, FL, on September 18, 2018.

James was one of five children of the late Teresa and Francis Kerr. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Nicole in 2003; and his three sisters, Terri (Toy), Bernie (Cherry), and Maureen (Orr).

A Delaware native, Jay, “Smoove,” brought joy and comfort to countless people throughout his life. He had a heart bigger than any other. He was a graduate of Christiana High School, and while working part-time at Crowell, he also enjoyed working at the Playhouse Theater with “Brownie” as part of the lighting crew for many years. He transitioned into railroad work, spending many years at Amtrak as a car repairman. He loved his Harley and the freedom of riding with friends. He was very involved with AA and ran the New Year’s Eve parties at Clayton Hall years ago.

He is survived by his son, Joel (Brianna Mahon) and their children, Nova and Luke, who gave Jay great joy; his brother, Patrick, who lives in New York; and his ex-wife, Linda Kotalik, who has been one of his biggest supporters. James has many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will feel a great loss without him.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 11 A.M. to 12 P.M. with funeral services beginning at 12 P.M. at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road Wilmington, DE 19808, on Saturday, October 13th. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Humane Society, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. Online condolences may be made at

Our deepest condolences to the family. We are so sorry for your loss. May your loving memories of James help you through this difficult time. May our loving, heavenly Father, who is the God of all comfort, give you the strength and comfort that you need (2 Corinthians 1:3, Psalms 83:18). He promises us that soon, "He will wipe away every tear from our eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain will be anymore" (Revelation 21:3, 4). May all of His promises concerning our loved ones who have passed away give you peace.
