Carl Ulrich Klein

Carl Ulrich Klein passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 5, 2018. 

Carl was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 24, 1927 to Mary and Ulrich Klein. Growing up, he attended St. Michael’s grade school. He apprenticed at Allis Chalmers in West Allis, WI, and served in the Army in Italy from 1945 to 1947. In September 1951, he graduated from Marquette with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and was a member of Tau Beta Phi and Pi Tau Sigma.

On Feb 9, 1952, Carl married Irene Rubner in Milwaukee WI. They moved to Delaware, where Carl worked for DuPont until 1958. He continued his career working for Atlas, ICI, Astra-Zeneca from 1958 to 1981, and later for Diamond State Engineering from 1981 to 1991. He served on ASME, DAPE, NCEE, ABET boards, and was president of DAPE.

Carl was a member of Toastmasters International, active at St. John the Beloved parish as a CCD Teacher, lector, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Athletic Association. Additionally, he was a backup substitute for Meals on Wheels, Emmanuel Dining Room and Wheels organizations and worked as a Thresholds teacher at Ferris and Baylor facilities. He competed in Delaware Senior Olympics and won a gold medal in horseshoes and table tennis, and a silver medal in bowling. He was an avid fisherman, bowler, golfer, and world traveler.

Carl’s greatest joy in life came from being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Irene; his two children, Carol Klein Monaghan and husband Francis, and Charles Ulrich Klein and wife Robin; grandchildren Maureen Center, her husband Seth, and their children Samuel and Claire; Thomas Monaghan, his wife Tina, and their children Theodore and Tahiri; Veronica Davis, her husband Shannon, and their son Emek; Steven Klein, his wife Kerri, and their children Arianna and Henry; and Jeffrey Klein and his husband Bob Thayer. He is survived by foster son Charles Krzywosinski, wife Joyce and children Carl and Jasmine Mae, and predeceased by foster son James Gouge. 

He is predeceased by sister, Marie Lucy Kuszewski and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, and survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 

Carl is predeceased by mother Mary and stepfather John Krinner and father Ulrich Klein.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, August 16th at 11 AM at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.  Burial will be private.
