Our Mother, Agnes Louise (Flanigan) Clarke, finished a wonderful life on September 1st at the age of 95.
Mom was born in Springfield, Ohio on March 7, 1923. She lost both her parents at a very young age and was raised by loving and caring relatives. Mom attended the Oldenburg Academy in Indiana and always remembered those days with great fondness. After a brief work career, she met and eventually married the love of her life and our father Bernard J. Clarke (Ben), on September 4, 1948.
Mom and Dad began their life together in Ann Arbor, Michigan where their first three children were born. With five more children and several moves that included stops in Columbus Ohio and White Plains New York, Mom and Dad ultimately settled in Wilmington, Delaware in 1970. After Dad’s passing in 1988, she spent many wonderful years at Stonegates retirement community in Greenville, Delaware.
Mom was a loving and supportive parent for us. As the mother of eight children, she relished her role as consoler, nurse, cook, chauffeur and referee. Mom loved the holidays with her house filled with children and even more so when she could spoil her grandchildren, making life-time memories for all. She enjoyed her travels with Dad especially to the Greenbrier, a trip to the Super Bowl where she met Joe Montana and visits to New York City. She also enjoyed summer vacations with her children and grandchildren in Stone Harbor, New Jersey and taking the bus to Atlantic City with her dear friend Mrs. J to play the slot machines. Mom was a warm and generous person, making friends wherever she lived and with whoever she met during her daily activities, and hosted many Saturday night dinners during her time at Stonegates. Mom had a strong Catholic faith and was especially devoted to the Blessed Mother. On any given weekday she could be found in “her” pew at the noon mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine.
Mom was preceded in death by our father, Bernard J. Clarke and our brother, Richard J. Clarke. Mom is survived and will be missed by her remaining seven children, Barbara Lynch (Chico), Mary Boyle (John), Louise Clarke (Chuck Easley), Bernard J. Clarke, Jr. (Lisa), Margaret Hunt (Mike Hathaway), James E. Clarke (Patty) and Kelly Giblin (Thomas) and 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial and burial will take place on Saturday, October 13 at 11:00 at St. Joseph on the Brandywine where friends are invited to call after 10:00. Our family wishes to thank the Meadows staff at Friendship Village, Dublin, Ohio and Capital City Hospice for their wonderful care of Mom in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mom to your local hospice or C.E.R.T.S., Inc., 1501 Casho Mill Rd., Suite 1, Newark, DE 19711.
